| Description |
A book-shaped reliquary by unknown artists from Saxony, Germany. The ivory was carved about 1000 AD. The frame is of gilded silver, inlaid with pearls, rubies, emeralds, onyx, carnellians, and rock crystal. It was commissioned by Duke Otto the Mild of Saxony about 1340 AD. The ivory depictgs three scenes from the Wedding at Cana. It originally covered a small vault in a church where leafs from the original copies of the four Gospels and relics of 11,000 virgins and four saints were kept. Cleveland Museum of Art. |
