P. är an-lagt på en slätt, mot n. hästsko-formigt omgiven av bergskedjor,och upptar en yta av 63 kvkm.med c:a 1,2 mill. inv. (1922). —P. består av två huvuddelar. Inreoch Yttre staden. Inre staden be-gränsas, även från Yttre staden,av en 23,5 km. lång, 11 m. högoch vid basen 18 m. tjock, krene-lerad mur, som avbrytes av medståtliga torn krönta portar. Yttrestaden omges av en lägre mur. —Inre staden 1. Tntarsta-den är P:s äldsta och förnäm-ligaste del. I stort sett äro stads-plan, murar och offentliga palatsoförändrade sedan 1400-t:s bör-ian. Till grund för stadsplanenligger ett regelbundet system avhvmidgator, som utgå från stads-portarna och löpa parallellt medmurarna. De utfyllande stadspar-tierna äro genomdragna av ettgytter av trånga gator, som i sitt 81 Pekinj? 82
