| Description |
Bongeunsa is a centuries-old Buddhist temple, though its current incarnation dates mostly to the mid-to-late 20th Century and it is located next to COEX Mall and other modern buildings. There is a pond in the garden, and in the center is an island with a life-giving spring. It is guarded by the Goddess of Mercy, Gwan-se-eum Bosal (관세음보살/觀世音菩薩), better known to most people outside Asia by her Mandarin Chinese name, Guanyin. I am more than free to sip from the spring after paying my respects. I could definitely use the protection that Guanyin extends to travelers, as in a week, my first-ever road trip on the Eurasian landmass would start. Guanyin's compassion would also be a nice diversion from evangelical Christianity, a major menace within South Korea (thanks to Christian theocrats' takeover of the national government) and back in the US (where Korean-American evangelicals just re-banned gay marriage in California, and badmouth President-Elect Barack Obama). |
