Description

The next 7 photos in our photostream display the Bon Echo Inn's new brochure circa 1927-28 which remains in the Bon Echo Archives. Merrill Denison owned and operated the Inn during this time. Tragically, the Inn burned down in 1936 after being struck by lightning.

In 1921 Flora McDonald Denison died unexpectedly of pneumonia at the age of 54, leaving the Inn and all of the property to her son Merrill. In the years following the Inn became a popular retreat for notable artists (Group of Seven), writers, poets and people of influence (source: The Mazinaw Experience by John Campbell).

Merrill's first wife, Muriel Goggin was also an author (Susannah of the Mounties) and managed the Inn even before she and Merrill were married in 1926. During the Inn's management by Muriel the Inn prospered.
