Summary[edit]

Description
English: Bog oaks, Woodwalton Fen, Cambs Deciduous forest dominated the Fenland landscape between 5–4,000 BC but the trees were killed off by anaerobic conditions caused by swamping during the post-glacial rise in sea level (during Pollen Zone VIIa, the Atlantic climatic period). These large trunks of oak trees were buried in the 'Lower Peat' layer, but were exhumed by peat erosion and wastage of the upper layers of peat following drainage for agriculture. As the 'bog oaks' hinder farm operations, they are removed from their resting place and piled up at the field edge.
