| Description |
Seen at Museum of Flight, Boeing Field, Seattle. This Boeing 707-120 was built in 1958 as VIP Transport for the President of the United States of America. Dwight Eisenhower was the first President to make use of this aircraft. I was able to tour its interior and look at the rather dated amenities (complete with electric wires wrapped up in cloth rather than rubber!) that nevertheless were state-of-the-art for the time. It was originally built as VC-137A, re-engined to become VC-137B, and relieved from VIP duty when VC-137Cs, based on more advanced Boeing 707-320, were acquired. The US Air Force operated three VC-137Bs, two of which are on public display. This is one, and the other is at Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson. The two VC-137Cs are also on public display, one at the US Air Force Museum in Dayton and the other at Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. Presidential duty is currently carried out by a pair of VC-25s, based on the Boeing 747. |
