Title
Britannia victorious: design for the naval pillar
Description
Satire on the French Revolutionary wars.(British political cartoon ); The pillar is decorated with figures and objects representing the defeated French navy and the broken principles of the revolution. The pillar is topped with the victorious figure of Britannia. On the horizon, a French fort is threatened by a thunderstorm. The names of British admirals are inscribed on the base. Gillray's design is in response to the plans for a naval monument proposed by other artists. A musical entertainment by Thomas Dibdin (1771-1841), The naval pillar, or Britannia triumphant, was performed at Covent Garden on 7 Oct. 1799.; Very little colour, on the pedestal.
