Summary[edit]

Description

This Neo-Second Empire-style apartment building is known as Bloomsbury Estates. Constructed in 2009, the building harkens back to the late 19th Century in style, craftsmanship, and character, though only one of the planned two buildings in the complex have been built thus far. It is located on a prominent site with great views of the downtown skyline, and commands a hilltop site that was long ago home to the first county seat and Courthouse of Wake County in the late 18th Century.

Wake County was formed in 1771, 21 years before the establishment of Raleigh, with its original Courthouse located at a small village that grew up around the resident of the prominent early resident Joel Lane, which was known as Wake Courthouse and later as Bloomsbury. When Raleigh was platted out and settled in 1792 to serve as the state capital, the courthouse was moved from the village to the newly formed city, and the former site became a distinct, smaller entity that in the latter half of the 19th Century became a part of the growing city of Raleigh. Today, the former site of the courthouse and village is indistinguishable from the inner city neighborhoods of the city, though the Joel Lane house remains standing as an historical museum that shows off the prehistory of the city and the area as a whole. In addition, an historical marker, located in front of the Bloomsbury Estates at the counter of South Boylan Avenue and West Hargett Street demarcates the original site of the courthouse.
