eaf, and expressions of opinion onthe subject by editors of papers published at schoolsfor the deaf, and others. The following is an at-tempt to present the gist of these reports and com-ments : When the thought first occurred to the originalinvestigator, that the blind-deaf might read spellingas they do signs, he tried the experiment with KatieMcGirr. First he spelled the alphabet slowly inher hand, and then spelled a word slowly with herhand on his wrist, feeling the motion of the cordsthere. The fact that Katie McGirr, very expert in allkinds of reading by touch and with all her years ofexperience, did not do so well as Leslie Oren at thefirst trial, was puzzling to Mr. Wade, but this ex-planation presented itself: Leslie was perfectlyfamiliar with his teachers spelling, while Katiewas not accustomed to Mr. Wades. In order to de-termine the matter, the latter requested Miss Bar-rager, Katies teacher, to experiment more fully. The result is given in a letter from Miss Barragerto Mr. Wade, November 23, 1903, which was laterpr
