Summary[edit]

Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

The Great Sand Dunes originated from vast lakes that once covered large areas of the valley floor. Through natural climate change, these lakes largely disappeared, leaving sand to blow with the wind and pile up in a pocket of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Remnants of the large lakes are found in a wetland complex in and near Great Sand Dunes National Park, including Blanca Wetlands, managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
