Summary[edit]
DescriptionBlack Book of Peterborough (12th–14th century), Society of Antiquaries of London, UK (21927205741).jpg | The Black Book of Peterborough (12th–14th century), a cartulary originally belonging to Peterborough Abbey, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, open at the "charter of Rounymede" (Magna Carta). Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538, some of the Abbey's lands were granted by the King to William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley (1520–1598), and at some point the book passed into the possession of the Cecil family, possibly because it contained documents relating to the Abbey's former estate. It was donated to the Society of Antiquaries of London by Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725–1793), a Fellow of the Society from 1767. The manuscript was on display in an exhibition at the Society entitled Magna Carta through the Ages, commemorating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta.
