the most popularwriter of the day. Beforethe completion of Pickwick,Oliver Twist was begun inBentleys Magazine. Pick-wick appeared in book formin 1837, Oliver Twist in1838, and Nicholas Nickle-by in 1839. Under the gen-eral title of Master Hum-phreys Clock, The OldCuriosity Shop and Barna-by Rudge were publishedin monthly numbers in 1840and 1841. For forty - three yearsfrom the appearance of Pick-wick there was no cessationin the literary activity ofDickens. His visit to Americain 1843 was followed by thepublication of his AmericanNotes, which held up to ridi-cule the manners and customsof the Americans in such away as to alienate many of his admirers in this country. Martin Chuzzlewit,jpublished a year later, contains more of the same cridcism. In 1843 appearedthe Christmas Carol, the first of the series of delightful stories adapted tothat time of peace and good-will, the remaining ones being The Chimes,The Cricket on the Hearth, and The Haunted Man, written at intervalsjup to 1848.

Butthe position was not congenial to his tastes, and he soon withdrew from it andreturned to his own loved walk. Dombey and Son, the story of a purse-proudmerchant, appeared in 1847 ; David Copperfield, depicting the career of a youngliterary man struggling up to fame, in 1849 ; Bleak House, founded on the mis-eries of a suit in Chancery, in 1853 ; Little Dorritt, the story of a young girlsdevotion to a father in prison for debt, in 1856; A Tale of Two Cities, in 1059 ;Great Expectations, in 1861 ; and Our Mutual Friend, in 1865.
