These examples will suffice to make manifest the fact thatthe warbler family is one of extraordinary economic value, themembers of which are immensely useful in checking noxiousinsects and with very few exceptions have no injurious habits.It is particularly gratifying that these charming birds, whosesong and plumage draw to them the good will of all intelli-gent people, should show so well that utility and beauty arenot always dissociated.

The vireos, or greeiilets, are universally recognized asamong the sweetest of feathered songsters. They are smallbirds, jnodest in manners and dress, very different from theshrikes, to which.the ornithologists state that they are closelyrelated. This is exclusively a New World family, composedof half a dozen genera and a little over half a hundred spe-cies : only one of the former, the genus Vireo, and thirteenof the latter occur in the United States. Of these thirteenspecies about half are common over a considerable area. Incolor our forms are mostly greenish olive or gray above andwhite or yellow below. They build slightly pendent nests intrees, migrate southward in autumn, and are almost exclu-sively insectivorous. They are more often heard than seen.
