Text Appearing Before Image:
. One of its feet shefound was crushed. With tremblinghands she severed the bit of skin bywhich it hung, and applied some heal-ing salve to the wound. The poor lit-tle creature suffered too much to tastefood, but after a few days accepted aFly from her hands, then a bit of meat, after which it folded its wings to sig-nify it had enough. The Bat at length became as tame asa Mouse and would hang itself to anyconvenient portion of its mistressdress; would eat whatever of axiimalfood she gave it, and lick milk off heffingers. At night it would settle uponher hair, but never went near othermembers of the family; would fly aboutthe room, and go out of the window insearch of insects, returning in a coupleof hours, and if the window was closedhang to the window-sill, or to the sash, until admitted. Thus it lived for twoyears, a happy, contented Bat, till onenight it flew out and never returned—a prey probably to some White Owlswho for years had made their homein an old belfry near by. i;j() (
Text Appearing After Image:
^ I RED AND BLACK BATS. Over the houses, in the windows, fluttering everywhere,Ivike Butterflies gigantic, the Bats dive through the air;Up and down, hither, thither, round your head and away,LfOok where they wander, coming ever with vanishing day. C. C. M. BATS are so much alike, especiallythose common to this country,of which there are numerousspecies known to naturalists, that the description of one will servefor all, with the exception of theVampire. The sub-order of smooth-nosed Batsis represented in this country by sev-eral species peculiar to America. Themost common in all the Atlantic coaststates is the Red Bat, or New YorkBat, which is a busy huntei of flyinginsects, which it follows so persistentlythat it frequently flies into rooms inpursuit of its favorite prey. It fliesrather slowly, but it changes the direc-tion of its flight very rapidly, and itsmovements in the air are very graceful.Besides this species is the Black Bat,and several others have been observedand described
