Text Appearing Before Image:
folds of his turbanand sharp and shrill its notes are heardfar across the dusky sands, and theweary camel, encouraged by its notes, moves on again with enlivened motion. It has often been noticed how quicklya cow will distinguish a new bell, andhow great a disturbance is created inthe whole herd, who will often take itupon themselves to chastise the unwarywearer. The herdsmenbegin their songs, the yodling soundsthrough the valley, the milk stools areset between the horns of the cattle, thecheese kettles and provisions are packedupon the beasts of burden, and the proces-sion gaily wends its way up the moun-tainside. Even if poorly protected from stormswhich may be encountered above, we can-not wonder that the cattle thoroughly en-joy this calm, beautiful life in the alps, and we are told that cows left in the val-ley below will oft
