There is no reference to the sweetOrange in the literature of this time andit must have been introduced at a laterperiod. It was certainly cultivated inItaly as early as the sixteenth century. In more recent years the cultivation ofthe various varieties has spread through-out the world wherever the climate andthe conditions of the soil will permit theripening of the fruit. Risso, in his valuable history of theOrange family, enumerates one hundredand sixty-nine varieties with distinctcharacteristics. Of these he classes for-ty-three under the Citrus aurantium. Besides the sweet and bitter varietiesthe more common ones are the MandarinOrange of China, a flat and spheroidalfruit the rind of which easily separatesfrom the pulp; the Tangerine, which is 134
