le tree at Me-chanics Valley. If so, there again theuntaught boy, agent of the mother thatnever thought, the Sunday school thatnever taught, and the minister of theGospel that never spoke, was the re-lentless enemy of the rare, beautiful, and harmless birds. If he failed toshoot the parents, he climbed the treeand caught the young. If the hostility to the owls of thecourt house were to stop, if the cagedbirds were to be put back with theirrelatives, if the nocturnal gunners wereto relent, would the remaining birdscontinue to add an interest to thepublic buildings by remaining therefor the future as the guests of thetown? Would the citizens of Doyles-town, by degrees, become interested inthe pathetic fact of the birds presence, and grow proud of their remarkablechoice of sanctuary, as Dutch townsare proud of their storks? To us, theanswer to these questions, with its hopeof enlightenment, seems to lie in thehands of the mothers, of the teachersof Sunday schools, and of the ministers. 224
