A YUL-\G SCREECH OWLDignified of mien but ridiculous in aspect (268) The Screech Owl 269 I suppose years of testimony will not change the current impression thatOwls see but imperfectly during the dayhght hours. Years of observationhave convinced me that they see quite as well as cats. A hairy caterpillar,crawling among the blades of grass of a golfers fair green, was seen and swoopedupon by the Owlet, though he had been sitting upon a fence-post some twelvefeet distant, bhnking in the early afternoon sun. Once captured and sampled,the caterpillar was rejected. A mouse would not have been refused, thoughthe Owlet had been crop-full. The habits of Owls in dealing with mice are well known; not so well knownare the details. If it is the severed head that makes the seraph, there will bechoirs of mice among the angels, for though such small fry are usually swallowedwhole, decapitation is the favorite method for piece-meal consumption.
