Is a native of Virginia, and was appointed to acadetship in the Na\y from that State in 1864, grad-uating with high honors in 1868, being No. 3 in aclass of eight)^ members. His first service afloat wason board the Saranac, in the North Pacific Squadron,and he also served on the same station on board theLackawanna and the Pensacola. He received his pro-motion to the grade of Ensign in 1869, and to that ofMaster in 1870. In the latter ^^ear he was ordered toduty on the China station, where he served for three3^ears on board the Alaska. During this period hetook part in the Corean expedition, and was placed incommand of the force which was landed for the pur-pose of enforcing the demands for indemnity pre-ferred by the United States Government.
