C, and soon afterwards proceeded to FortressMonroe with the division of regnlar infantry. Withhis regiment he participated in the siege of York-town, march np the Peninsula, battle of Gaines Mills,June 27, 1862, retreat to the James River, and en-gagements at White Oak Swamp, the Charles CityCross-roads, and also the battle of Malvern Hill.Retreating from the Peninsula he took part in thesecond battle of Bull Run and battles of SouthMountain and Antietam ; also Fredericksburg. Ow-ing to sickness he was not present with his regimentat Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, but joined it atthe time of the draft riots in New York, and againproceeded to the field and took part in the Campaignof Mine Run. He was appointed Division Inspector,First Division, Fifth Army Corps, by GeneralCharles Griffin in April
