Colonel Days military career began when heraised a company of volnnteers in Ohio at the firstcall for troops in 1861. Owing to the excess of troopsenrolled nnder this call his company conld not bemnstered and was disbanded. Captain Da)^ then en-listed as private in Company C, Seventh Ohio Infan-try, Jnne 20, 1861, and participated in the campaignin West Virginia that 3xar. After the action ofCross Lanes, Angnst 26, where his regime at sufferedheavy loss, he was made corporal. In the winter of1861-62 he was at Loop Creek, Paw-Paw, Romney,etc. He was promoted sergeant and recommended fora commission for gallantry at the battle of Winches-ter, Virginia, March 23, 1862, under General Shields,where he was wounded, but remained at the front,and in a charge of his brigade was one of the firstover the stone wall forming part of the defense ofthe eneni)^, and was one of a small part)^ followingAlajo
