MAJOR JAMES EVELYN PILCHER. 217 and became an approA^ed candidate for appointment to the Medical Department of the Army. In June,1883, under a contract as Acting Assistant Surgeonin the United States Army, Dr. Pilcher proceeded to the Department of Dakota, and took station at FortAbraham Lincoln, proceeding in the autumn of thesame 3^ear to Camp Poplar River, Montana—beingmeanwhile in Februar)^, 1884, commissioned as Assis-tant Surgeon—whence he was transferred in 1884 toFort Custer, Montana. In 1887 he proceeded to FortMonroe, Virginia, but was almost immediately re-lieved from dut\ there and assigned to station at FortWood, New York, with quarters upon GovernorsIsland, where he also had charge of the hospital dur-ing the ensuing two years, and attained his Cap-tainc3\ In the latter part of 1889 he took station atFort Clark, Texas, returning the following fall toGovernors Island, where he remained during thewinter and spring of 1890 and 1891, after which herepaired to Fort Ringgold
