rring the degree of Doctorof Medicine upon him in 1873, a preparation whichwas further developed by two years work in the hos-pitals of St. Louis. Soon after this Dr. W^nnan entered upon his lifework proper by accepting an appointment as Assis-tant Surgeon in the Marine Hospital Service. Hereceived promotion to the rank of Surgeon in 1877,and served successively at St. Louis, Cincinnati,Baltimore and New York, after which he was sum-moned to the headquarters of his Corps at Washing-ton, where he served continually until he succeeded tothe command of it. During this time he had chargeof the publication of sanitary- reports and statistics,and produced many important works pertaining tothis subject. The Purveying Department was alsounder his direction and by him brought to a high de-gree of excellence. His main duty, however, and thework to which, in the latter part of the period previ-ous to his appointment as Surgeon General in 1891,his time was exclusively devoted, was the supervision
