| Description |
English: Bio-inspired hybrid multifunctional drug delivery system Left: Natural diatom microalgae (DEMs) are functionalized at their surface with photoactivatable elements (orange spheres) linked to vitamin B12 (red spheres) acting as the outer tumor-targeting layer. The construct can be loaded with a chemotherapeutic drug (light blue squares) to be selectively delivered to the tumor site in the intestinal tract. Once DEMs are bound to the tumor mass, the chemotherapeutic drug is slowly released. In addition to that, the micro-capsules can be photoactivated to generate a toxic CO or 1O2, sensitizing the tumor to the treatment. |
