Description

Hatchment in Bingham Chapel, St. Andrew's Church, Melcombe Bingham, Dorset, of Richard Bingham of Melcombe Bingham who in 1766 married Sophia Halsey of Great Gaddesden, Hertfordshire. On canvas with moulded wooden surround. Arms: Quarterly of 4:

  • 1: Bingham
  • 2: Ermine, a lion rampant gules crowned or (Turberville of Bere Regis);
  • 3: Azure, three arrows or (Cadicott of East Whiteway, Dorset)
  • 4: Party per bend or and azure, a bend lozengy per bend gules and argent between six fleurs-de-lys counterchanged (Pottenger)

Overall an inescutcheon of Per pale argent and gules, a griffin segreant counterchanged within a bordure engrailed or (Ridout);
Impaling: Argent, on a pile sable three griffin's heads erased of the first (Halsey of Gaddesden Park, Hertfordshire)
