Wooden handcrafts known as alebrijes, representing fantastical insect-like creatures

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Alebrijes were invented by Mexico City-born Pedro Linares López, an artist who usually worked the papier-mache genre of handcrafts known in Mexico as "cartonería". One night, in a fever-induced dream, he saw himself sorrounded by fantastical creatures that repeated the word "alebrijes". Upon waking, he began to sculpt figures like the ones he saw in his dream. The figures gained recognition and were specially appreciated in the state of Oaxaca, where local artisans chose to sculpt them out of wood (usually the one known as copal) as opposed to papier-mache. Alebrijes are known to represent both real animals and fantastical creatures, usually in bright-colored patterns which often represent cultural elements.
