notes oftravel and observation at that time I realize how littleI did see of Palestine, and how imperfect an idea Iacquired of the old city of Jerusalem and of the oldcountry of Palestine and of its inhabitants in compari-son with that which I now possess. Every excavationfor a building site in Jerusalem lays bare ancient re-mains and unearths almost inevitably antiquities.The scientific excavation and exploration which I havedescribed first called attention to this, and pretty soonefforts began to be made to collect what was foundand record what was seen in the course of buildingoperations. Architect Schick, to whom I have beforereferred, did an extremely valuable work in this direc-tion in Jerusalem. So also did Selah Merrill, who wastwice American consul, each consulate covering aconsiderable period of years.
