Bewegungsstudie (Movement Study) 1925, black and white photograph by Rudolf Koppitz (restored)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Bewegungsstudie (Movement Study, in German), 1925, black and white photograph by Rudolf Koppitz (1884-1936).

Gelatin silver print on carte-postale, printed c. 1930. In 1925 Koppitz created his masterpiece, Bewegungsstudie, in which he photographed the nude dancer, credited to be the Russian Claudia Issatschenko, but who is more likely the daughter of this woman, ballet dancer and choreographer, Tatyana Issatschenko Gsovsky, with her head thrown dramatically back and flanked by three dark-robed women, lends Bewegungsstudie to the highly decorative and symbolist tradition of the Viennese Jugendstil. Photographer's blind stamp (margin); photographer's Prof. R. Koppitz, Photo-Werkstätte address and copyright credits in print, numbered '1' with various annotations in pencil (verso). Image: 4 1/8 x 3 3/4 in. (13 x 9.4 cm.). Sheet: 5 x 4 in. (15.2 x 10 cm.).

Provenance: Private Collection, New York; with Edwynn Houk Gallery, New York; with Galerie Kicken, Berlin; Katrina Doerner Photographs, New York, 2011.
