English: Bennett & Haviland 12 shot wheel revolved repeating percussion rifle made by CB Allen, circa 1838-1841
"This particular rifle was traded to the Maoris at Russell Bay of Islands about 1840 by the captain of an American whaler. It was afterwards taken from the Maoris at Gate Pah, Tauranga. The donors considered it to be the only rifle of its kind in existence." This is an example of an early repeating rifle patented in 1838 by Bennett & Haviland of Maine, USA. Note reference to an American percussion nine shot repeating rifle manufactured by C.B. Allen of Springfield Massachusetts in 1837 - also referred to as a Cochran Mini chambered and Nonrecoil rifle that had an under trigger mechanism with a revolving cylinder which had percussion nipples on the under surface – this was the third model of the company, while the second model had a magazine called a harmonica magazine because of the transverse lie. |
