Summary[edit]

Description
English: This house was originally built as a one-story Coquina stone structure circa 1804, which was occupied by several owners, most notably being the family of Peter Benet in the 1830s, whom originally ran their store out of the first floor, before building a shop across the street in 1840 to house Peter Benet’s retail business. The house was also utilized as a smithy and a tavern by various other occupants over time. By 1964, the house had been heavily modified and was home to a branch of the USO, which vacated the structure upon its purchase by the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, which demolished the heavily altered second-story addition and an adjacent building from a later time period, only leaving the first floor Coquina walls of the house standing, upon which a more period-appropriate second floor was reconstructed to restore the building to its circa 1839 appearance. The house was restored as part of an effort to restore the colonial appearance of the city by the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, which reconstructed several other houses and structures from the colonial period during the 1960s and 1970s.
