Figures 3 and 4, for example, illustrate 125 BELL TELEPHONE QUARTERLY respectively the growth in toll messages over a period of yearsbetween Chicago and New York, and between Chicago andLos Angeles, which routes are typical examples of this growth.Figure 5 shows the growth in messages for the combined tollbusiness over the transcontinental routes between Chicago andNew York and Los Angeles and San Francisco over the sameperiod.
