It is to benoted that not only is the percent increase very rapid in com-parison with that of past years, but it is expected to continueat a very rapid rate. A remarkable feature of the increase in the toll business isthe fact that the largest increases are being felt in the verylong distance business, particularly on the transcontinentalroutes and the routes between the largest cities in the variousparts of the country. Figures 3 and 4, for example, illustrate 125 BELL TELEPHONE QUARTERLY respectively the growth in toll messages over a period of yearsbetween Chicago and New York, and between Chicago andLos Angeles, which routes are typical examples of this growth.Figure 5 shows the growth in messages for the combined tollbusiness over the transcontinental routes between Chicago andNew York and Los Angeles and San Francisco over the sameperiod. FiGXJRE 3 system as a whole has increased 34 percent over the last 3years, the toll messages between Chicago and New York haveincreased about 115 percent, the toll messages between Chi-cago and Los Angeles 157 percent, and the combined trans-continental business 226 percent. These increases in toll mes-sages have required considerable enlargement of the size of thecircuit groups between distant points and have contributedlargely to the major construction problems in the design andlayout of the plant. 126 DEVELOPMENTS IN TOLL TELEPHONE SERVICE The reasons for the recent rapid growth in the toll businessare many. The growth has no doubt been influenced by thegood level of general business in all parts of the country.There has also been an increasing public appreciation of theextent to which telephone toll service is of value in both busi-ness and social life and of the variety of uses to which it canbe put.
