In all other cases returnedgoods from telephone orders were lower. The reason generallygiven is that people either have made up their minds about thepurchase before they telephone, or they are ordering standardor packaged material. Furthermore, there is the tendency ofshoppers to visit the counters to compare the merchandise ofvarious stores before buying, making the final sale either bya second visit or by telephone. It is safe to conclude that in most stores returned goodsexpense should be lower on telephone orders than on counterorders. Delivery Expense This is an important item, for about 38 per cent of all mer-chandise bought in department stores is now delivered and thetrend is increasingly toward more deliveries.
