Summary[edit]

Description

Robert French took a few shots of this striking early 19th century bridge near Spanish Point in Clare (Miltown Malbay per the catalogue entry). Given that this was likely a famine relief project, the effort that went into the ornamentation is interesting. While the loopholes are fanciful, do we think the apparent coats-of-arms have meaning?

[/photos/beachcomberaustralia/ beachcomberaustralia] and [/photos/20727502@N00/ guliolopez] tell us that this bridge was built as part of famine relief works, I think most of us would immediately presume 1840's but no, this bridge was built in 1822. There was famine in certain western areas and as can be seen from the following quote thousands of people were involved in schemes like this.

"A striking feature of the public works initiative in Ireland was the sheer physical demand placed on the framework by the vast numbers seeking relief. In July 1822, Griffiths reported there being ‘upwards of 10,000 persons at present employed in the County Limerick exclusive of farming laborers, mainly on road building"
