hout touch-ing at Han. The pedestrian should, however, secure the servicesof a guide at the hotel in Han (one of the brothers Lanoy). Admission for a single visitor 7 fr.; two or more, 5 fr. each; 2 fr. moreis exacted for awakening the echoes by a pistol-shot, for 1-4 pers., and50 c. for each additional person; fee to the guide extra. The Guide-Al-bum du Voyageur a la Grotte de Han (2 fr.) contains a good plan of theentire cavern. The Trou de Han is nearly 1 M. in length and consists of a series ofchambers, opening into each other, and varying in height. The nume-rous stalactite-formations have been fancifully named in accordancewith their forms, Trdne de Pluton, Boudoir de Proserpine, Galerie de laGrenouille, etc. The most imposing chamber is the Salle du Ddme, whichis 500 ft. long, 450 ft. wide, and 130 ft. high; and the Merveilleuses^ fourchambers with the most beautiful stalactites, only recently made acces-sible, are also very fine. A visit to the cavern is extremely interesting,

August,September, and October are the best months for inspecting the cavern;in spring the swollen state of the river often renders access impossible.The cave has been visited by tourists since 1814. The stalactites haveunfortunately been sadly blackened by smoky torches, but the grotto isnow lighted with naphtha and magnesium. — Scarcely V2 M. farther onis the Perte de la Lesse, also well worth a visit, where the river dashesinto a subterranean abyss. The next station of the branch railway is (5 Sl.jEprave (Malarm-Jacques ; Marneflfes Inn, where information as to the grotto maybeohtained), at the confluence of the Lomme and the Lesse, withanother grotto (adm, 2 fr.; guide V.
