Summary[edit]

Description
English: Beccles Railway Station Beccles station really is a shadow of its former self, once a major junction for the East Suffolk Line from Ipswich to Great Yarmouth, the branch to Beccles via Oulton Broad (then Carlton Colville) and then the Waveney Valley Branch going West. Facilities includes a large goods yard plus goods shed, engine shed, turntable, watering facilities, a large island platform, two signal boxes and a footbridge. This was along with the impressive buildings and canopies, the place oozed Edwardian grandeur.

Since the line north to Great Yarmouth closed in 1959 and the Waveney Valley line throughout freight and passengers dwindled. In BR's ownership all facilities were demolished apart from a few features. All the station was downgraded too was a single line, short platform and 'bus shelter'. The engine shed survived until 2006. The Town is served with a two hourly service due to it being a single line from Halesworth to Lowestoft. But as you can see now there is another line, things are looking up. Network rail want it to become a community station, the island platform is to be restored (or rebuilt to modern standards) and be used again. The Beccles loop is in the deep planning stage and may be put in soon but won't be signalled until 2012 and funding is secured.I have been informed the old track here is just to be the bed the formation down. So Becclesodians will in the future have an hourly service, that's the plan!
