Summary[edit]

Description Recently uprooted almond trees intended for American River habitat, shown Jan. 4, 2012, demonstrate wear and tear from beavers between the Watt Avenue boat launch and Mayhew Drain in Sacramento, Calif. The metal fence (foreground) will serve as a barrier to protect a total of 6,785 plants at two erosion repair sites from the beavers, until the plants can sustain themselves. The plants were placed more than 15 feet away from the levee to comply with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safety standards for vegetation on levees, improving river habitat without compromising levee stability. It’s all part of the Sacramento River Bank Protection Project, a joint effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District and Central Valley Flood Protection Board to reduce flood risk by maintaining levees and reducing stream bank erosion along the Sacramento River and its tributaries.
