Summary[edit]
DescriptionBeatties in Victoria Street, Wolverhampton - geograph.org.uk - 1182137.jpg |
English: Beatties in Victoria Street, Wolverhampton Founded as a small draper's shop in 1877, Beatties has been the prime department store in Wolverhampton since the late 1890s when it moved to the side of Victoria Street the present expanded building occupies. In the 1920s, local Wolverhampton based architects Lavender, Twentyman and Percy were commissioned to design the large Art Deco building that exists on the current Victoria Street site. Further expansion of Beatties in this building occurred in 1992 and 2000, including taking over the corner area which had been occupied by Burton the tailor. In all the years I have lived in Wolverhampton, Beattie's (I can't always drop the apostrophe!) has been renowned for its high quality of goods and service. Since House of Fraser bought out the whole chain of Beattie's department stores in 2005, some people say "fings ain't wot they used to be!"
This is now a listed building. Plenty of detailed information can be found here: http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/listed/localist/beatties.htm and here http://www.morganwylie.com/pages2/portfolio/websites/beatties/history.html |
