A few scrambled upoil to the roof in the hope of findhig someentrance there, but the)- were fired on throughventilators in the corrugated iron. One ofthem, a sergeant of the Protectorate Regiment,had four bullets through his jacket, but escapedunhurt. It was soon realised that the attempt uponthe fort was hopeless, and orders were given to fifty-one officers and men, or just half the forcethat was closely engaged. Lieutenant Paton andSergeant-Major Paget had been killed whilefiring their revolvers into the loopholes. CaptainSandford had been hit by two bullets just as histroop reached the work. His last words were acall to his men to press on. Only four of histroop came out of the action unwounded. Everyone had behaved with the utmost intrepidity-.
