The Battle of Leipzig or Battle of the Nations (German: Völkerschlacht, French: Bataille des Nations) was fought 16–19 October 1813 by the coalition armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Sweden led by the Russian Tsar Alexander I and prince Schwarzenberg against the French army of Napoleon I. Napoleon's army also contained Polish and Italian troops as well as Germans from the Confederation of the Rhine. The battle involved over 600,000 soldiers, making it the largest battle in Europe prior to WWI. Date "18 OCT. 1863" divided by the Victory Angel, around: "DEUTSCHLAND ZUR EHR ZUM 50TEN JAHRESTAGE DER SCHLACHT"/ Date "18. OCT. 1813" divided by Germania standing on dragon, and holding a broken chain in her hands. Curved above: "DEM FEIND ZUR LEHR". Medallists: G. Loos and (Johann Karl) Fischer, 1802 Berlin - 1865 Berlin. Condition: Almost EXTREMELY FINE, no hidden faults. |
