| Description |
English: Battersea Gasholders. Three of the four gasholders on this site can be seen in this view from Battersea Park Road. The remarkable feature of the site is that the four holders each represent a different era of technology. The furthest one has an early cast iron frame and represents the earliest type of holder to be used in large numbers. The nearest holder belongs to the next generation, using wrought-iron lattice posts and frames. The shields at the crossings of the uprights and cross-beams carry the date 1882. The final two holders represent 20th Century developments, although I am not sure of the chronology, both types being effectively still in current use. Of the two, only the large piston-type holder is visible, the fourth being a self-supporting spiral-lift telescopic holder of this type 793871. The piston-type simply has a large piston, sealed at the edges with grease, which rises and falls within the tower above the gas. |
