  • Library has two impressions: No. 40a - Col. aquatint. Cahill, 40; Newark, 164 (first state). Pencil note: 6 or 8 proofs printed this way. The plate has been greatly altered since this was printed. No. 40b - Cahill, 40; Newark, 164 (second state). Signed in pencil with note: some of my artist friends like this proof better than other proof of plate in final state. - they think proof of final state too dark. Printed in 2 impressions. L. & D. Brown, Inc. Pencil note in another hand: there were only 3 or 4 proofs printed in this manner.
