Summary[edit]

Description The statue commemorating the mathematical physicist James Clerk Maxwell (a native of Edinburgh), commissioned by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, at the east end of George Street. Maxwell had been a Fellow of the RSE, as well as a being a Fellow of the Royal Society. The plinth of the statue has two bas-reliefs, this one showing Albert Einstein demonstrating the warping of space-time by massive astronomical bodies, from his General Theory of Relativity. Einstein, and Newton (on the other side), are depicted as Ancient Greek philosophers.
