Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built in 1831 as a Federal-style building, this structure was constructed to serve as the Abingdon Town Hall, and was renovated in the late 19th Century to its present size and appearance, housing city offices, a public meeting hall, and the town’s police and fire departments. The building became the Barter Theatre in 1932, which has grown into a substantial cultural center for the region. The Barter Theatre opened during the worst period of the Great Depression, with admission costing either 35 cents, or the equivalent value in produce, for each customer. The building features a front-gable roof, a red brick exterior, large buttresses, patterned brickwork, buff brick accents, a stained glass oxeye attic window, one-over-one double-hung windows with rusticated stone lintels and sills, a rusticated archway in front of the main recessed entrance, and a Colonial Revival-style one-story addition to the west, which serves as the Abingdon Town Hall. The building is a contributing structure in the Abingdon Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The Barter Theatre today is The State Theatre of Virginia, being designated as such in 1946, and remains in active operation.
