Summary[edit]

Description
English: Barry's Amusements, Portrush Barry's Amusements were founded in 1925 by Evelyn Chipperfield and Francesco Trufelli. He was a Circus Director and former trapeze artist. She had come to Ireland with her five sisters and one brother in 1920’s with their touring productions. The pair fell in love and were invited by the Railway Company to set up a permanent site in Portrush

The railway company was largely responsible for the growth of Portrush. Mr Trufelli recalls that if you bought a house in Portrush the railway company gave you two years free travel on their line. Originally, the amusements were not permanent and were taken down each winter. They became permanent during the war when a covered site was introduced. Barry’s was only open at Christmas once – during the war the American Airborne Division stationed in the area took all the local children to Barry’s as a Christmas treat! The name Barry’s came by chance. "Trufelli" was thought to be too foreign, so they named the park after the first delivery lorry to arrive on site. The first Big Dipper was made of wood and imported from Germany in 1939. It was destroyed in the storms of 1942. Some of the salvaged wood was used in new dodgem track some of which still exists today. In its early days, Barry's also featured novelty acts who performed in a theatre.

Some scenes from popular movie Mojo MickeyBoo were filmed in Barry’s.
