On Saturday, I went to a Barrel Racing competition held at Andwemet Farm (not sure of the origin of that name and we met) as part of the Maine Barrel Racing Association. Comments are always enjoyed and welcome especially critiques. It was a chance to be outside in nice weather, to experience a new sport, and to try to get some nice action shots. This is a low key event with lots ot participants and it allowed photographers to be as close to the action as the fence allowed. There is a Flickr site Maine Barrel Racing for any interested in seeing some really nice shots.Barrel racing is a rodeo event in which a horse and rider attempt to complete a clover-leaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time. Though both boys and girls compete at the youth level and men compete in some amateur venues, in collegiate and professional ranks, it is primarily a rodeo event for women. It combines the horse's athletic ability and the horsemanship skills of a rider in order to safely and successfully maneuver a horse through a clover leaf pattern around three barrels (typically three fifty-five gallon metal or plastic drums) placed in a triangle in the center of an arena.
