Baron Nils Posse XIII. Baron Nils Posse. The system of medical gymnastics which we owe to thelabors of Pehr Henrik Ling and his successors at the RoyalNormal School of Gymnastics (the Gymnastic Central In-stitute) in Stockholm was brought to the attention of Ameri-cans as long ago as the early fifties. By the end of thatdecade writers on physical education had begun to refer toit under the name of the Swedish movement cure, andauthors of manuals intended for school use were borrowingsome of their exercises from this source. But to meet theneeds of growing boys and girls Ling had also devised asystem of school gymnastics. This had been further elab-orated by his son Hjalmar (1830-1886), and teachers trainedin the Central Institute, or by its graduates, were everywhereusing it in Sweden, in common schools and high schoolsalike. Of the aims, content, and methods of this branchof the Ling gymnastics little or nothing was known inthis country until within the last twenty-five years. Hartvi
