Title
Barber shop, Toledo, Ohio [approximately 1895]
Description
Interior view of a barber shop. The shop has a dark ceiling, patterned wallpaper, and a wooden floor. Two walls other shop are visible. The back wall has a large painting hung on it. There is a light colored door close to the wall's corner. A round metal object is to the right of the door. Three customers are sitting in straight backed chairs. Two of them are facing the shop while the third man is facing them. Two of the men are in dark suits, while the third man is in a light colored shirt and dark trousers held up with suspenders. Each man is holding a paper of some kind. The first and third men have their papers open on their laps while the man between them has his rolled up. A fourth man is having his hair cut. The barber chair he is sitting in has an elevated footrest; his feet are resting on it. The man is facing away from the barber and into the mirror hung on the wall. He is wearing a suit. A light colored towel is spread across his shoulders and upper back. The barber is standing to the customer's side and facing the camera. He has a light colored shirt on, a darker vest, darker trousers, and a moustache. The wall the customer is facing has a floral lamp suspended from the ceiling. The lamp is close to the wall's corner. There is a large picture hung on the wall between the lamp and the barber's mirrors and cabinet. The mirror and cabinet are quite ornate. The mirror is divided into three sections and is framed in wood. The center section has carving above it. The cabinet is also divided into three sections. The center section is lower than the other sections. Larger drawers appear to be beneath this section. The other two sections have a number of smaller drawers. Supplies and towels are on the cabinet's top. Additional towels are on a shelf in the section closest to the front of the photograph. A towel is hanging from one of the cabinet's knobs. A rectangular box with an ornate knob is on top of the cabinet's far left side. Terms associated with the photograph are: | barbershops | barbers | chair
