Summary[edit]

Description
English: March is Women’s History month, and we want to highlight some of the amazing women here at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on our social media sites.

Name:
Barbara Douglas

Title:
Senior Endangered Species Biologist

Duty station:
West Virginia Field Office, Elkins WV

Female Conservation Hero or Mentor:
Jane Goodall

Where did you go to school and what did you study? Environmental Science at Stockton University

What’s your favorite thing about working for the Service?
Working with such a dedicated group of people who are so passionate about what we do. Through the Service, I have an opportunity to make a difference in the world.

What’s your favorite species and why?

Freshwater mussels! Even though they are small and unassuming they can have a significant effect on their environment. They maintain water quality, stabilize stream beds, and provide habitat for other species. They also have some really amazing adaptations such as lures that mimic minnows or other prey to attract their host fish. Some videos and pictures of their lures can be found at http://molluskconservation.org/MUSSELS/Adaptation.html or http://unionid.missouristate.edu/gallery/L_reeveiana/Reeviana.htm
