English: Third Reich vehicle identification-recognition banner-drape-flag, WW2 Collected by 66643 Cpl. Mervyn Herbert Crockett, 24 Infantry Battalion, 2NZEF shaped (isoceles trapezium) red cotton flag or banner, white cloth disc with black swastika, appliqued on one side only; apparent-sizing for a jeep bonnet; three small metal grommets (eyelets) along each angled side, one in each corner and one in the middle; (dissimilar) cord fragments attached to grommets on two corners of longest side markings- record of banner's acquisition printed in one corner, blue ink- "66643 PTR. M. H. CROCKETT - CAPTURED ALAMAIN (sic) - 1942"; "MERVYN" (upside down)

Notes "CAPTURE OF GERMAN FLAG and SIGNAL BAG - BY MERVYN HERBERT CROCKETT Alamain 1942. the red and whie bag was the signal (identification) for the day and positioned on the German tanks. Mervyn captured the signal bag from a German tank which ahd been it by an anti-tank shell. On this day, the 18th Battalion had come down from Syria and over run the Germans from teh Southern end of teh Alamain Line. mervyn captured the German Flag from a pole. This was at the turning point of the war when the Germans began retreating until the end of the war."
