Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Here you can see a well preserved cheque book.

During the history of Martins Bank, Martins acquired some other not so well known banks itself and eventually got merged with Barclays Bank.

This cheque book was as you can see proudly presented itself as the Bank of Liverpool and Martins Bank, other merges force the bank at the time to "Drop" the Liverpool part of the bank name and just call itself Martins Bank.

On the cheque you can see a blue oval with the wording 'Two Pence' this was a TAX place on all cheques that had a value of £2.00 and over. This encouraged holders of a cheque accounts to produce what at the time became know as a "Scotch cheque", to achieve this you wrote your cheque out to the value of £1 19s 11d and gave this to the cashier along with 1d (in old money).

"Old money" means the pounds, shillings and pence system we used in the UK until 15 February 1971.
